Honduras Reserva Pacavita
Posted by Courtney Friend on
Honduras is now the worlds 2nd largest producer of washed Arabica beans and the 7th largest producer of all coffee in the world. This follows a brisk growth in production that was the result of the IHCAFE – Instituto Hondureño del Cafés (or Honduran Institute of Coffee) commitment to revitalize the coffee farms with new plantings.
There is little doubt that coffee production and exports prevented Honduras from bankruptcy following the 2009 political crisis. The perfect combination of a record crop and high international coffee prices generated enough employment and hard currency to allow the Honduran economy to stay afloat and not collapse.
The Pacavita region is located in western Honduras and is surrounded by a diverse environment of biological reserves and mountain ranges. The coffee, shaded by Inga trees, grows in rich clay soil that was once the home to the mighty Mayan Empire. Today, these Mayan descendants, the Ch'orti' are still living there.
The climate in Pacavita is ideal for coffee, with well defined seasons, that contribute to the high quality specialty coffees this region produces. The rainy season results in a beautiful red cherry that is followed by a dry season that allows these hand picked beans to be fully sundried on the farmers patios.
We will be offering three different coffees using these organically grown beans:
